The Disappearing Act

I really can't say why I keep disappearing,
other than:  life happens.
So, here I am, yet again, playing catch-up.

On the craft-front, there's not been a lot of activity.
I had new dining room furniture on the way which
left me with a completely empty room.
I know you quilters would think what I thought....

Look at all that space!  Perfect for basting quilts, eh?
As much as I would like to report that all three were
basted that day, sadly, I ran out of batting!
Yet, not so sadly because I found this a measure
of accomplishment as I had just purchased that
huge roll of batting a little over a year before!
I did get two of them ready to go--currently sitting
in my sunroom ready to be quilted asap.

In case you're interested, here's the new furniture.

Other projects include new coats of paint in my
living and dining rooms--kitchen, hallway and
open stairway/foyer are next.
Also we're slowly re-doing our utility bathroom.
(removed wallpaper, painting wall, putting all new fixtures in,
lighting, sink, and shower door)
No pics at the moment.

Yes, we have finally gotten SNOW here in the Midwest!
It has been so dry here that these 2 back-to-back
storms have been welcome by everyone.

my garden

Especially the kids who got 4 days off of school
around a weekend so it was really like vacation.
Except for Mom who did nothing but launder wet
snow-clothes and make hearty soups--but I enjoy it!

Check out how it blew onto the chicken wire of their run.

I think we got about 14" from the first one,
7" from the second, with a little
melting during the two days between.

The chickens aren't big fans.  I had to dig out a part
of their run and put straw down so they'd actually
come down for food and water.

Now, of course, when I'd been begging for snow for
2 years, God chose the exact day that my dh was
flying home from a VERY full business trip.
[Ready?  Chester (UK), Berlin, Zurich, Johannesburg (S. Africa),
Dubai and Singapore--all in 11 days.]

This made storm #1 bittersweet & stressful.
His worst experience yet, with delays, cancellations,
giving his seat away from under him, etc.  In
the end, I had to drive to Oklahoma City
(fortunately, the highways were clear south of us)
in the middle of the night to get him because
most everything coming in here was cancelled.
Somehow, as heavy as my eyelids got,
we arrived safely back home at 3 am!
Life is just an adventure, huh?!
(I have thanked God repeatedly for my all-wheel drive SUV!)

He's off again in a matter of days to Poland
and perhaps Austria.  A much shorter trip, at least.
No storms predicted here, and those quilts are ready
for me and my undivided attention.

And in a few months, another trip.
But, guess where--and who gets to go along???
That's right!  I'm giddy!
Any helpful input, tips, etc would be appreciated!
I only had two years of French and that was
a LONG time ago!

A Slow Start...But a Start Indeed

It seems quiet here but in the first 2 weeks
of this year, I have managed to squeeze out
8 baby blankets and 4 scarves.

Nothing serious but it will have to do
for feeding my creativity when other things like
wedding planning, basketball games and
first-of-the-year cleaning and organizing
are keeping me busy.

The baby blankets above are for charity;
the scarves are destined to be gifts so...
no pictures!

While I've been working on organizing and thinning
the pantry and closets, one bit of organizing
I've over-looked is my blog!
Seeing that my other pages are quite out of date,
I'm thinking a tab of completions would be
better as the year, and I, progress.
I'll be working on it...

Looking Forward Already

Happy 2013 to everyone!

While I don't care much for the "Eve" partying,
I rather enjoy New Year's Day.
I love to make lists, and resolutions
for a new year are my favorite.

I love how God wisely created the seasons for us,
knowing we need the time to grow & bloom,
work and play, reap rewards
and then relax before starting over.

The gift of a new year provides us with the
perfect time to reflect on our past.
What were the previous year's great moments?
The not-so-great?
Were there changes that worked?
Maybe one didn't turn out so well?

Then we step forward, resolving in every way
to become better.  Perfection will never
be reached.  But giving up without trying,
well....that's just not my style!
Besides, it's much more fun to work at it--
and that's our purpose here, isn't it?

I won't bore you all with my list
(it'll probably come out here and there anyway)
but may I share that I am off and running?
I've already made a gift for Christmas '13!

These scarves are sooo fun & easy!  I hope they're still popular next
year because they are perfect for a quick, create-something fix!

With Epiphany in a few days, Christmas will end.
When the season comes to a close, I'm never
ready--in fact, I go into a bit of a mope.
My cure?  Start on next Christmas!
I'm already planning knitting, quilting, sewing...
(Thank you, Pinterest!)

Goodness, that will require a list, won't it?

A small, sad note:  it's time to say goodbye
to the eggnog and caramel brûlée lattes till next fall.
Ah, well...to everything there is a season.

New Stockings

It's always good to knock something
off of the to-do list, especially
when it's been there a while.

Only, I can't quite cross this one off yet--
I still have the monograms to make.
At least we were able to use them
on Christmas morning...
with gift tags as markers!

That Gift You Can't Wait to Give

You know that one gift that turns out really well?
Well, I couldn't wait to give this one!

This quilt top was completed and basted
together back in October...and then
set aside for other obligations.

But, in the middle of the Christmas time-crunch,
as I call it, I was to re-discover,
for the ump-teenth time,
how fun and relaxing machine quilting is.
(some lessons we have to keep learning over and over!)

Knowing time was a factor, I kept it simple.
(Of course, with my simple machine, I have to.)

Yet, I thought this touch of red,
with its beautiful print of cardinals and holly,
really stood out so the quilting needed
to be kind of special.

I've tried quilting holly before but
with no real luck.  Luckily, this time it clicked.

The greatest thing about leaves is that no two
are ever the same.  This takes a little
pressure off when quilting them.

This was not a Christmas gift but a birthday gift.
Even though the birthday was a couple
weeks away, I had to give this one at Christmas.

I love the fabrics of this quilt so much that
I found it hard to give away.
(WHY didn't I buy more?  It was on clearance!)
However, the recipient was so so so happy
with it so the separation wasn't so bad.
And it's now at my in-laws' house so I'll
get to visit it every Christmas!

New Year's Resolution:
Gift more quilts!
